Scholarship Programs

The Southfield Kappa Foundation (The Foundation) in cooperation with the Southfield Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (The Fraternity) has established programs to provide monetary awards to high school and college students on a competitive basis. These programs are consistent with the goals, objectives, and by-laws of the Foundation and the Fraternity.

 Purpose:

  • To provide financial assistance to worthy students from the Detroit metropolitan area who plan to attend four-year degree colleges and universities

  • To encourage young people to participate in meaningful community service activities

  • To promote academic excellence and achievement in high school and college

  • To encourage high school young men to participate in the Fraternity’s Kappa League Youth Program

 Scholarship Awards:

  • General Scholarships – Eligible applicants are African-American male and female students attending public or private high schools in the Detroit Metropolitan area. The Detroit  Metropolitan area is defined as  Wayne and Oakland counties of Michigan. Criteria will include academic achievement, community service, and financial need as determined by members of the Foundation and the Fraternity on the scholarship committee. Successful students must attend a four-year accredited college or university in the school year following the award. Students who are awarded a general scholarship but fail to satisfy all requirements will forfeit the award. All forfeited monies will be returned to the general scholarship fund.

  • Returning Students Awards – Eligible students are those students who have previously received a Foundation general scholarship and are continuing their studies in an accredited college or university. Students are eligible to apply as long as they remain in an accredited school.

  • Kappa League Awards – These awards are reserved for high school students who have participated in the Fraternity’s Southfield Kappa League youth development program for at least two consecutive years prior to the award. Successful students must have good grades, good character, and receive the recommendation of the Kappa League advisors.
