The Southfield Kappa Foundation was established
in 1993 by members of the Southfield Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Inc. The purpose of the organization is to provide scholarships to
worthy young people in the community and to support other community service
activities provided by members of the Fraternity. As an independent 501(c) (3) non-profit organization,
the Foundation offers opportunities to secure the needed funding for these
important charitable activities from community-minded businesses and
individuals.
The Foundation provides scholarships
primarily to African American young men and women from the Detroit metropolitan area. Eligible
applicants are high school seniors who will attend a four year college or
university in the fall of the year they apply. College students who are previous winners
of the Foundation's scholarships are also eligible to apply and compete
for a limited number of renewal scholarships.
Since its inception
the Foundation has provided more than $250,000 in scholarships. Corporate
sponsors of the scholarship program have included Ameritech,
Auto-Alliance, IBM, Comerica Bank, Compuware, Dow Automotive, General
Motors, Ford Motor Credit, Federal-Mogul, Masco Corporation, Mobil Oil,
Dallas Mavis, Charity Motors, S.E.T. Enterprises, Specialized Services, Inc.,
and UPS.
The Foundation has no paid
staff members or officers. All activities are performed by volunteers,
primarily members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. With virtually no overhead
expenses, almost all of the proceeds from fundraising activities and donations
go directly to support scholarships and other community service programs.
